Not Every Gen Z Employee Is Lazy: Why the Best Ones Deserve More Recognition
Let's address the elephant in the room.
Many business owners, managers, and supervisors have struggled with some of the younger employees entering today's workforce.
I've heard the complaints.
I've experienced some of them myself.
Employees not showing up.
Employees quitting without notice.
Employees expecting flexibility before they've earned trust.
Employees who seem unwilling to do the hard work required to grow in their careers.
So yes, I understand why some employers have developed concerns about Gen Z.
But here's what I've learned after years of working with employees from all backgrounds:
Some of the most impressive employees I've ever worked with have been Gen Z.
The problem is that we spend so much time talking about the negative examples that we overlook the exceptional ones.
The Difference Isn't Age—It's Character
When people criticize Gen Z, they're often describing behaviors that have existed in every generation.
There have always been hardworking employees.
There have always been lazy employees.
There have always been reliable people and unreliable people.
What separates great employees from average ones isn't their age.
It's their character.
And I've met Gen Z employees whose work ethic would put people twice their age to shame.
The Gen Z Employees That Impress Me
The Gen Z employees who stand out aren't waiting for success to find them.
They're actively learning.
They're asking questions.
They're looking for opportunities to improve.
They're willing to admit when they don't know something and eager to learn how to do it better.
Many of them understand technology in ways that can significantly improve workplace efficiency.
They learn new systems quickly.
They adapt faster than many experienced employees.
And they often bring fresh ideas that challenge outdated processes.
They Want Growth
One thing I've noticed about the best Gen Z employees is that they want growth much sooner than previous generations.
Some managers see this as impatience.
I see it as ambition.
They want feedback.
They want coaching.
They want to know how to improve.
They want to understand what it takes to move to the next level.
When organizations provide clear career paths and strong leadership, these employees often excel.
They Value Transparency
The strongest Gen Z employees I've worked with don't just want instructions.
They want understanding.
They want honest communication.
They want leaders who explain expectations clearly.
When leaders communicate openly and consistently, many Gen Z employees respond with loyalty, engagement, and impressive performance.
The Ones Nobody Talks About
We hear a lot about the employee who didn't show up.
We don't hear enough about the Gen Z employee working overtime to help their team succeed.
We hear about the employee who quit after two weeks.
We don't hear about the young professional taking classes at night, learning new skills, and working hard to build a future.
We hear about the employee who lacks motivation.
We don't hear about the young person balancing work, school, family responsibilities, and financial pressures while still showing up every day.
Those employees exist.
I've worked with them.
And they deserve recognition.
What Employers Can Learn
The best hiring decisions happen when we stop judging people based on stereotypes and start evaluating them based on effort, attitude, and potential.
The strongest Gen Z employees are not looking for handouts.
They're looking for opportunities.
They're looking for mentors.
They're looking for leaders who believe in their potential.
And when they find those opportunities, they often exceed expectations.
Challenges but SUCCESS FOR YOUR COMPANY
Do I believe there are challenges with today's workforce?
Absolutely.
Do I believe some of those challenges are more common among younger employees?
Sometimes, yes.
But I also believe there is a group of hardworking, ambitious, talented Gen Z

professionals who are being unfairly overlooked because of the actions of others.
Those are the individuals I choose to focus on.
Because when you find the right young employee—someone with character, integrity, curiosity, and a willingness to learn—you aren't just hiring for today.
You're investing in the future of your organization.
At Starr Up Consulting, we believe great talent exists in every generation. Our job is to identify the people who are ready to grow, contribute, and make a lasting impact.
Your Step Up Starts with Starr Up.
